Better Than Home Brew

The Gentlemen Bastards ~ Bastard's Brew (2015)

Three years after the release of their self-titled debut, The Gentlemen Bastards are storming back on the scene with their "Bastard's Brew". This second album is a booze fueled rock and roll machine with the finest in stoner and blues hardware, all designed to lay down fuzzed out, distorted riffs and heavy bass grooves. In addition to all the stoner rock goodness, the vocals are massive, with a bluesy country swagger, and a harder rock edge at times. They make a point to never get in the way of the music though, always adding to the songs instead of detracting. And at ten tracks, there was plenty of opportunity, but you're only left with one of the best stoner rock albums so far this year, and it has been an exceptional year already. The track "Umbra" was an immediate favorite of mine, coming out the gate at high energy and cranking out a furious stoner rock song with subtle hints of punk rock thrown in here and there. After a quick drum intro, the guitar storms in with a screaming riff that dominates everything until the vocals drop in.  At only two and half minutes it's the shortest track, but they managed to squeeze every bit they could of out of them. All in all, this is what I'd imagine Clutch and Kyuss would sound like getting stoned in a recording studio. If you've ever wondered what that would sound like, here's your chance to find out.
